Elementary School No. 29 has a name — and it’s a good one. On Nov. 12, Humble ISD trustees announced that the new campus would be known as Centennial Elementary School in honor of the district’s 100th anniversary.

The school will be located in the Atascocita area in the nearby Lakewood Pines neighborhood.  Portions of Balmoral will be zoned to Centennial, which is scheduled to open in August 2020. Those students will be able to choose to attend the school they are currently zoned to—either Ridge Creek or Groves elementary schools, respective of home locations—or Centennial Elementary.

The district broke ground on the 116,450-square-foot building last August. Prominent in the school’s design are natural light and areas that allow students to collaborate with each other on projects, lessons and activities. The school will include a secured visitors’ entry and other safety features. The layout is based on pods, which are classrooms located around a central makerspace for each grade level. Design plans also include stacking lanes to keep traffic from backing up on major streets.

A principal has already been chosen. Alison Pierce has many years of experience in education, previously serving in Galena Park ISD and beginning her 13th year as an educator in Humble ISD. She has served as principal of Timbers Elementary School, assistant principal at Jack M. Fields Sr. Elementary School, and Humble ISD Elementary science coordinator. Ms. Pierce earned her bachelor’s degree at McNeese State University and her master’s degree in educational leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University.

We are excited that many young Balmoral residents will have the option of attending the newest school in the highly regarded Humble ISD. You can read more about it here.

Switch up your yoga routine and have fun with classes designed specifically for the water on our beautiful Balmoral lagoon, 15808 Crystal Terrace Drive, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15.

Our friends at Chaka SUP Yogawill be teaching the basics of Power Vinyasa on a paddle board during four classes that are open to the public. The cost is $40 per class and there is a limit of 12 people per class so you will want to sign up ASAP. Paddle boards will be provided.

What is SUP (stand up paddleboard) yoga? It’s a fun and challenging new way to play on the water that provides an opportunity for excellent low-impact exercise to build strength, endurance and balance.

By adding this new challenge of the unstable, moving environment of the water to a yoga practice, it is necessary to slow down, focus intently and move carefully in and out of each posture.

You may have to embrace falling in but that is part of the fun and we can’t think of a better place to make a splash than our crystal clear lagoon.
